2018 Odyssey to be 75lb lighter, and a few more tidbits from SAE WCX17

A good friend of ours attended the SAE WCX17 in Detroit today and observed Honda's technical presentation concerning the upcoming 2018 Odyssey.

Following that presentation, the following batch of photos popped into my inbox.

According to the presentation, the Odyssey has gone on a bit of a diet. As you can see in one of the slides below, the 2018 Odyssey's body is trimmed by 34 kg (75 lb) lighter than the outgoing Odyssey, the new 10speed transmission is 13 kg (30 lb) lighter and the chassis is another 11 kg (22 lb) lighter. The Odyssey gains some of those weight savings back via some feature additions, but in EXL trim, it still comes in 75 lbs lighter than the outgoing Odyssey EXL.

Also notable are the improved spring and bump stop lever ratios, thanks to the new rear suspension design. This should result in better ride quality and NVH. One slide seems to indicate that these improvements are at least partially responsible for a 2dB improvement in road noise measurements.

As a bonus, there is a slide and a photo showing some of the mechanical details of the upcoming 10-speed automatic transmission.

We will have a chance to drive the new 2018 Odyssey within a matter of weeks, and we'll tell you all about it as soon as we can.
