Alessandro "Alex" Zanardi, two-time CART champion, made his first appearance at a CART event after the devastating accident last September in Germany. Zanardi was Rookie of the Year in 1996 while driving a Reynard-Honda-Firestone R96I for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing. He then dominated the next two seasons, winning back-to-back championships and helping Target/Chip Ganassi achieve a record four straight driver's championships (Vasser '96, Zanardi '97-'98, Montoya '99).
Zanardi waved the green flag for the Toronto race, and his fans and former racing rivals welcomed him back with open arms.

CART driver Max Papis, a close friend of Zanardi, posted this picture of Alex sitting in former teammate Tony Kanaan's Pioneer Lola-Honda. Had it not been for the accident, Zanardi would've been driving the Pioneer car for Mo Nunn Racing.
