Honda's Hawk: LSR-Attempt Bike    (Score: 2, Interesting) 11-08-2018 16:18

In 1971 American Honda and Reaction Dynamics built and raced a twin CB750-engined Land Speed Record motorcycle called the Hawk. Weather and technical problems ended the 1971 two-way record attempt but the Hawk set a 1 mile and 1 kilometer records of 285 MPH. In 1972 the Hawk ran at the Bonneville but crashed before a record could be established. In 1973 the Hawk was restored and shipped to Japan to be displayed in the Honda owned museums.

Got a spare 24 minutes? Here's the video on it.

Surprised by some of the primitiveness of this effort. Definitely a Skunk-Works project...but with big AHM money behind it.

I was working at Honda back then in the M/C Sales Division. We had stationery and POP all printed-up saying "Honda: World's Fastest Motorcycle".

When the effort failed, we had to change the slogan to "Honda: World's Fastest-Moving Motorcycle" (Meaning World's Biggest Seller...thus fastest-moving). But...it just didn't have quite the same ring to it.

Well, that was a riot... Old video making technique, that voiceover guy who's in EVERY video training and documentary. Nice share.

They way the chassis was smoothed out with blowtorch and hammer is definitely an old school method. I wonder why they pulled out though... Seems like an achievable goal.

A recollection I just received from one of the guys involved in this project. I also wonder why they gave up...looks like something they could have done with further work. And it would have allowed them to use all that "World's Fastest Motorcycle" stuff they had already printed up.

Here's his post:

Yes, some of the primitiveness was due to budgeting restraints on the engine testing. Our first engine dyno work was performed at McCulloch ADD engine lab where I worked prior to joining AHM. This was done gratis from ADD management. the dyno setup we had at AHM was in a building WO toilet facilities so we rented an outhouse.

This dyno setup was done to give the rider an opportunity to operate the engines as though he was in the bike. A concern was the shifting accuracy. We scrounged a lot of the stuff needed because we used money to have special stainless manifolds made and purchase the fuel injectors. The TO4 Air Research turbo was donated. The whole project was spare time for me as I still had my duties as national service manager. Reaction Dynamics did not get their official speed record bonus payment because we did not get an official speed record.

We only did the project because of the boldness of Mr. Masa Suzuki (AHM Sales Director at that time). H. Nakamura (AHM President) was not an enthusiast but Masa was.

Honda R&D was very interested because R&D was enthusiastic and they saw to it we got the higher strength con rods I requested. We needed those rods because we ran fifteen pounds of boost pressure in those engines, that is how we got 150hp from each engine which is more than three times the NA power.

Valves bent because the rev limiter did not function at the cold temps, which prevented the turn around in the one hour return run. Then the rains came and shut us down. If we had not lost those two weeks on the salt with the four bar linkage front end who knows? We had two engines in reserve and we could have heated the rev limiter. But the rains came in November.

Nonetheless, I am glad we got the opportunity to make the effort and we did get a fun film out of it all.

Yes...the voice-over announcer is just a slice of 1970's documentary films. And the music bed sounds like it's from a '70s porn movie, from time-to-time. Pretty funny.

Its also crazy to see how American of a company Honda is. They invested early over here, pretty diverse Japanese company in the 60-70's.
